Web5 lug 2012 · it sounds to me like the chain in the transfer case is stretched, mainly because it makes the sound only when it's under heavy load. a broken gear or a worn ujoint would make the noise all the time. your tcase is a 231 if you only have a part time 4x4 option on the 4wd shifter, it is a 242 if there is also a full time option in addition to the part time. Web4 nov 2010 · The main reason is the chain is not spinning unless the truck is in 4 wheel drive. My chain really only makes those noise if I get really low in the rpms like 500 and the truck is boggin out. To number 2--. Get a buddy and a pizza put the the truck on jack stands (big ones) and start the truck and roll it through the gears. Web3 nov 2009 · my transfer case is the NP-207 i think (4wd high - Neutral - Low) with the AX-15 manual transmission. It shifts into 4 wheel just fine, but when it gets to the point where i need the traction and the wheels may start spinning it makes an awful grinding noise like clutches or something.
